I changed my thermostat and my car still over heats heater no longer works when we changed thermostat no water came out when we removed hose to get to the thermostat??

my pontiac grand prix 2001 check engine light came on. i checked the codes and the coils came up. i tried testing the coils myself with a small vacuum hose a a light tester to see if i was getting the right amount of spark and all of a sudden my car turns on but shuts off immediately after its been turned over. what could be my problem? please help 1 Answer
