ping in engine, dash light chimes, noise stops, 5 min later chimes again, noise starts up again. Is this a piston?

I wouldn't think a piston noise would stop and restart. Have you checked the engine oil level. Have you had the check engine trouble code(s) read? How many miles on your Jeep? Have any repairs been recently done to it?
