H3 won't start after sitting for 12+ hours

Asked by Eric Aug 29, 2015 at 01:49 PM about the 2007 Hummer H3

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have an H3 2007 and have an issue for months now that if I leave it without
running it for 12+ hours; it randomly will not start, and locks my keys into the
ignition-won't give them back.  If we jump it, it will give the keys to us and will
be fine until I leave it dormant again. We have replaced the batteries twice now,
and had it in to be looked at twice-each visit: $500+ each time. The radio,
clock and electric would stay on even if the keys were successfully out of the
ignition...I think it was slowly draining each battery if left too long.  Our GM
certified shop finally diagnosed the problem correctly and saw that the vehicle
changed from 'off' to 'accessory mode' with no key in the ignition, which
shows a faulty ignition switch. The ignition switch internal malfunction was
removed and replaced and now it functions appropriately. I encourage all of
you that have these problems to report them...This SHOULD be a recall item
as it is known that GM has had an extreme amount of problems with ignition
switches with many makes/models (including ours) and has recalled many of
them (not ours yet). I am in the process of sending letters/making contacts to
resolve what has cost me over $1000 in diagnosis/repairs for a faulty
mechanism that was put in my car in the first place...

What fixed my Hummer when waiting 10 min to start it no longer worked. My H3 has under 100,000 miles Went out to my H3 yesterday around 2:20PM to go get my daughter from school and it wouldn't start (Not the 1st time this has happened but the 1st time it happened at such a bad time) I've previously waited the 10 minutes on probably 3 separate occasions over the past couple years and it's always started..... Not this time... I waited a little over 10 minutes and it still didn't start. Waited another 10-15 minutes and still didn't start... Made arrangements to have my daughter picked up.. Went out later in the evening still wouldn't start.. I remember reading a thread here where several people had said changing the fuel fuse relay out with the Rear Defrost fuse relay helped solve their problem.... So today I go out dreading to even fool with it and my goodness it actually worked. One of the guys wrote that changing out relay #66 with #72 was the fix but mine was #66 with #71 Not #72.... So anyway, Hope someone reads this and it can also help them...

May even want to take it a step further and talk with a lawyer (they generally give free consultations to see if you case is worth their time) about small claims court to recoup the $$$ you lost sooner rather than later.

I am having the same issue with my 07 hummer h3 thank you hopefully this is what’s wrong with mine
