You've got the Audi engine model, sorry to say. A mechanical disaster to say the least. The Porsche engine model has fuel injection using electronic fuel injectors, just like todays cars. That car has too many issues. Get a 944 or 924S. My advice: get rid of it. You could search for a 2.5 and drive train from an "S" model or 944, but it's a lot of work and not worth the effort.

Clogged fuel filter?...intake air sensor?...bad fuel dist. rebuild?...keep looking or take Smitty22 advice and dump it. I used to have a 1978 Porsche 924. It was in the garage being worked on more than it was on the road. An early model 944 is a much better car or a 924S (that's a 924 body with a 944 engine)

Sounds like the sensor plate isn't adjusted properly or coated with gunk. Make sure that the gap is correct around the entire plate to the bore/venturi , and that the height isn't too low or high as it will cause it to bounce...
