my 87 v-6 firebird is acting funny... it revs very high after short amounts of time and shifts in and out of gear. what is the problem? someone told me it could be the idle control sensor... is that right?

the only details i can give is that there is 166,000+ on the car but only 73,000 on the motor

It sounds to me like the transmission is slipping in and out of gear also allowing the car to rev high in the process. This is a common problem with higher mileage cars. I would take it to a reputable transmission repair shop (like AAMCO or Lee Myles) and have them diagnose it. There should be very little cost that my ultimately be applied to the repair (if one is needed).
