HOW CAN YOU tell when a timing belt has to be changed

Just started making a knocking/squealing sound in the engine. ANy idea what it might be?

They should be changed every 100,000kms. If it is knocking it may be to late, engines are " interference fit" types now! Meaning that 4 valves per cylinder are timed so precise that if the belt or chain jump or skip that will cause valves to hit the piston and bend them. Good luck if that happens. $$$$$$$$$
