Black smoke is caused by too much fuel (rich mixture). Low oil can be caused by a leak or by a worn out engine (bad oil rings allowing oil to pass into the cylinders). Check the oil level using the dipstick and also look under the car for signs of a leak. Hard to say if it is worth $500. It may need major repairs.
