shifter too loose

i have a 86 vw cabriolet i have brought back to life this thing runs drives great but the shfter it way to hard to find 1st and second this car was a 5 speed and now has a 4 speed not sur if that is why or does anyone have an idea on a cheap fix

I live in bath Michigan near Michigan state I would like 2800 but don't care if I sell it is awsome
