how do i get an alternator to charge ?

hiya . the problem is on my vw trike .. alternator wont show any more charge than 12-20
volts .. so ive taken an alternator off another running trike ... and put that on ... still getting
the same 12-20 volts .... am i missing something ... fanbelt broke ...and since then ive
had this problem ... respect spanner ..
