Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hello again, you have been so helpfully, it's great. I have a 1974 volkswagen super
beetle,it hasn't been running in 9 yrs, just started up once a month. The compression on
one cylinder is 60 . I was told the valves may be sticking, and if I use it for awhile it may
get better and the compression will return yo normal. Is there any truth in this statement?
Do I need a motor job?

No harm in running it for awhile- maybe the rings got corroded and will get better- maybe not- amazing that it still runs after 9 years of sitting- you may need more work than that-

NO one considers the Thermostat on an air-cooled engine...it is located on the external sheetmetal duct to block the air to necessitate rapid starting...in a COLD environment will notice it malfunctioning...a '74 probably has one but is so corroded air simply does never get to it's job of keeping the cylinders cool, as every air-cooled engine owner knows the number 3 cylinder is the first to go because the OIL COOLER is located above it...folks often MOVE the location so this does not happen~ yes, I would bet the Number 3 is the devil~ ...although as jamnblues has said, make sure the hydraulic valves are adjusted correctly~
