As long as belt is on,you can,but if light is on,that means genarator may not be charging the battery, and may not power you all the way on your our journey.

Your battery will go flat- and the car will stop- I don't think it will run for an hour if the battery is getting no charge- that's the beauty of those old classics- an alternator is cheap, a voltage regulator is cheap-

My car is at my cabin an hr from the city where I have a garage, it would be easier to work on and easier to get the alternator checked or buy a new one. If I bring it in I have 3 charged batteries and will have someone follow me . Will let you know what happens,in a week or so, thanks so much for your help--- andy

just keep in mind when the voltage gets to low and the car starts to stall be sure you shut it off since the car can easily flood the cylinders or foul the plugs.

you likely have a short in the wiring my man. start pulling out wires and checking for signs of breaks.

I had this problem a week ago--I was at a hospital and had no problem getting there-about 50 miles from my home-when I returned to the car and started-no starting problem -but the Generator Light did not go off I checked the wiring briefly and all looked fine-the Generator was turning normal,so the Fan Unit was working-I drove the car back home-just over an hours drive with peak traffic and the car moved normal-no switch off- at stops it was idling fine-I managed to get home non-stop and switched off the ignition-when I tried to restart, the Battery was dead-the Generator Light was on all the time while driving-there was no charge I removed the Battery and took it to a Battery Centre where they charged the Battery overnight and checked it showing full charge-so the Battery is fine I just need to figure out where the problem lies-I have no Test Tools-the car starts with the Battery fully charged but will run down and the Generator Light stays on-so I drove the car well over an hour ten minutes Maybe someone can help he diagnose the fault-I replaced the Generator 6 months ago and have had no problems until now Any help will be appreciated
