Dear BillE-- The original tires for the 1973 Volkswagen Beetle were 165-15. I had bought a Beetle brand new back in 1973. I drove into my driveway one night and I was listening to a baseball game. I put the car into neutral until the end of the inning. Then I turned the car off and went into my house. I heard a crashing sound from out near the street, but I didn't think anything of it. The next morning I cam out and my car was gone. I walked down the driveway and there was the car, just the nose sticking out of a row of bushes. The only damage to the car was one demolished tire which ran over a small stump. So, I have experience with those tires. Good luck from Bovan.
