WHAT CAUSES BACKFIRING IN 72 BUG?

I have just had my EARLY 72 bug brought back to life. hasn't run since 2005. It's awesome! But it just started backfiring! What causes that? HELP! Thanks much for
any feedback you can give me.....Sarah Wurm

Back fire could be caused by the engine timing being off a bit, or a lack of enough fuel when accelerating.

Thanks Tony. You gave me a good place to start. The idle has changed and slowed down.....runs a little rough when I first start it in the morning. Appreciate the input....Sarah Wurm
