Where to start if my 1970 VW Bug hasnt been driven in a while and doesnt want to hold an idle

I would drain out as much gas as you could then put some fresh fuel in it, then let it run for as long as possible take it for a ride if you still have good brakes. I would also add a fuel system cleaner to help clean the shellac out of the carburetor if your lucky it will straighten out without removing the carb and cleaning it inside
