My gas gauge doesn't work.  How do I know it is the guage, sending unit or float in the tank.  Any easy way to find out?

Well I know this works in 79 and up vdubs, never worked on a 69 beetle but I'm sure the sending units are almost the same, there should be two wires going to your fuel tank (sending unit) because in 69 the fuel pumps were mechanical. Take those two wires (with ignition on (engine not running) and have someone watching the fuel gauge inside, as you cross the two wires together but only do this for a quick second the fuel gauge should jump in the dash if it does then the gauge is fine change your sending unit, if the gauge does not move at all after crossing the two wires then replace your gauge checking the fuse first of course.
