Why does my 1964 beetle jump when it is in first gear, then when it shifts to second and then sometimes in third?

The car basically jumps when I shift into different gears. My mechanic told me it had to
do with my clutch cable cord being new, but I don't see how that could make a difference.
This has never happened before when I changed the cord.

The clutch is not full disengaging when the pedal is down. The cable needs to be a little tighter.
