None of the early VW models with wide 5-stud wheels were available with disc brakes from the factory. Later models with 4-stud wheels did come with both discs and drums. If you want to put disc brakes on the front of a 1959 beetle you can either swap to the later model 4-stud discs or buy an after-market disc brake kit for the wide 5-stud wheels.

The 1500 cc Bugs had disk brakes. I think the 1500 was an option starting in 1967.
