on a 49 dodge coronet do the positive on the batttery connect to the motor for the ground

The negative side, not the positive. If you connect the positive,it will cause a short circuit

YES !!! dont listen to these people who dont know...POSITIVE goes to a head bolt right on top of the block.. your car is 6 volt positive ground,
