Bucks and dies when put in gear

Automatic transmissions work on pressure, and their seals direct that pressure to the gears that you shift to. In your case, leaking seals are spilling pressure to adjacent gears, so you have more than one gear active at a time, and the transmission won't run that way. You need a Mercedes qualified transmission shop to work on this, and you likely need a rebuild. I'm guessing around six grand.
