When the fuel gauge hits just below the half tank the engine cuts out

maybe if you can clarify for me a bit what you mean by vented? I installed a new petrol pump and cleaned the tank as well. currently fuel is slightly above half tank but once it drops the engine cuts off

As the gas is being pumped out it has to be replaced with air , if the tank is closed up tight you get "vapor lock " , most all vehicles have a canister tank with a line going to the gas tank and an intake port . Just a thought , I have no idea what you have done . Drive with the cap loose to let some air in , let us know what happens .
