Thinking of buying a 1997 MB E320 and need advise

my friend's 88 yr old mom is selling her 1997 car. it has 20,000 miles and is in terrific condition. since i never owned a mercedes, i wondered if this was a good year/car to purchase. the price is right but are there any downsides to this car i should be awared of?

That's a good vehicle to get particularly with such low miles. I would nevertheless have it checked out by a mechanic, only because I would want to make sure the basic maintenance was performed. The MB you want to avoid are after 2000 because of lower grade components. The 1997's styling is still fresh and you see many of them still on the road looking great. I would advise you to keep the maintenance up to date because that will ensure the longevity of your vehicle. Its also good to get a mechanic you trust that won't rip you off. Maintenance and repairs at the dealership can be expensive. The only down side that I can think of is that the mileage is not particularly good. Look into a product called Ethos to increase your mileage & lessen the wear & tear on your engine. When you park first come to a full stop, and keep your foot on the break. Then place the gear into Park. Then immediately apply the parking break. You probably already do this, but I've seen many people needlessly wear out their tranny by not doing so. The tranny was never designed to keep a car in Park without the assistance of the parking break. This way the break takes all the stress and weight of the vehicle instead of the tranny. Have the transmission checked out because there's no telling what granny may have done. My mechanic told me the 1990 vintage vehicles are bullet proof if you take care of them. Congrats and enjoy!!!

Check the rear wheel arch lips - notorious for holding mud and water and therefore for rusting. If they're ok, have them treated anyway - or just filled with grease? Otherwise no known major faults. My 98 E300TD had done 140,000 miles when I sold it and it went and looked like a 30,000 miler.
