front motor mount separates about 1/2 to3/4 inch when going thru gears. top and bottom bolts tight. need replaced?

Yes if your engine mount is broke you should change it right-away. When the engine mount is broke you are changing the thrust centerline and putting higher stress loads on drivetrain.

i have the same car and the samething happend the stock front mount on those are hydraulic they are filled with oil similar to a shock i switched to this solid mount http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/sku/Volkswagen/Passat/R eplacement/Motor_and_Transmission_Mount/1990/GL/4_Cyl_2- dot-0L/REPV311704.html? loc=Front&tlc=Engine+%26+Drivetrain&intcmpid=Product+Listi ngs+Best+Seller its solid rubber and stiffend everything up. it also eliminated some of the torque steer on hard accelerations
