2002 vw cabrio/ how does the fuel pump relay work

The fuel pump relay gets a signal from the ignition system to supply current when there is spark. So if your fuel pump isn't working, check to make sure the car has spark first because that may be what's wrong with the car. Ignition coil is the most common failure on that car that would cause a no start condition, from my experience. Does this answer your question?
