99 to 06 GMC 1500 How to activate odometer to get mileage in the junk yard

Asked by cfandm Sep 03, 2017 at 02:33 PM about the 2006 GMC Sierra 1500

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I need to pull a transmission at the u-pull it junk yard.  Is there a way,
if I had a battery, but no key to activate the odometer to see how many miles are on the vehicle.   It would be a 1999 to 2006 GMC 1500 pickup or suburban
or similar.

Here in Pennsylvania the inspection mechanic writes the current mileage on the sticker on the windshield. Take a look, maybe they do something like that where you live. Or you may know a used car guy who can run a CarFax report for you using the VIN number. That would show you the last reported mileage.

If u have a battery hooked up, press the button on the cluster that u use to reset the trip meter and the vehicle mileage should display. If that doesn't work for some odd reason, check the glove box for a current inspection slip. It should def be on there from last inspection.
