I have a 1997 ford f250 4 wheel automatic what kind of a/c refrigerant do I need?

When the a/c switch is turned on the compressor runs for about 3 seconds then shuts off. A friend said it was low on refrigerant. If this is correct what kind of refrigerant do I need?

R 134 A,if compressor kicks on then off put or have 2 cans put in,you dont want to overcharge the system.
