Cannot get the new clutch to go in the last inch on 96 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4. What is wrong?

If you mean that the transmission will not go back into place, pull it back out and check the rollers in the pilot bearing. That's where the nose of the tranny shaft goes into the flywheel. The rollers are usually held in place with grease and they sometime fall if disturbed.
