Tick then knock and nothing with lost horsepower

Asked by NatesDoDge Jul 06, 2017 at 02:06 PM about the 2002 Dodge RAM 1500

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Was driving my o3 dodge ram 1500 with 4.7.. and
it started making a tick sound at stop light has I
started to gain speed it went to knocks then
completly stopped ticks and knocks and I started
losing power until it was floored only going 10mph
and I pulled over at a car repair shop luckily I
thought at the moment as the truck died
completely. They happen to be outside and seen it
die.  We poped the hood an the oil is almost
completely silver. . They said I need a all new
motor ($2000) but Im not sure if their trtn to get
one over on me.. I figured maby my rocker fell off
and my pins where getting shaved down to make
the silver oil. Maby a lash got stuck open and hit
the cam.. but do ya think I should just get a new
motor or replace parts and flush out what I have?

The silver may be bearing material. I think your engine is shot.

$2,000 for a new motor? That is really low so make sure of what you are getting.

They said now it's a used motor with 100,000 miles on it. For $2000 that seems like a lot for that milage. And i assume they are getting it from a salvage yard somewhere. Lol my luck it will still be ticking. just got the truck for $1600 from a repo auction. So any money I put into it I can probably get back out if I ever sell it.

If that price is installed it is probably correct. Ask yourself if you are going to keep it or sell it. If it is a keeper, install a freshly rebuilt engine.
