Dodge 1500 v8 4.7 slt

Asked by 249Wolf Sep 18, 2016 at 11:18 AM about the 2002 Dodge RAM 1500

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I never had an issue with this pickup until i was
driving and the plastic T in the cooling hose broke
making it start to over heat. Got it fixed but now its
going through a bottle of coolant in about 3 weeks.
There is no white smoke coming from the pipes or
any discolouration in the oil. Can anyone help me

Get the cooling system pressure tested. You can rent or even borrow the test setup from most auto parts stores. You can also test for the presence of hydrocarbons in the coolant. Not all head gasket leaks result in oil/coolant contamination or white smoke. If cooling system is being overpressurized by a blown head gasket it will just dump coolant out to the ground via the overflow while you're driving and you'd never see a leak. But it's premature to jump to that conclusion, I'd just start with a pressure test to look for leaks.

More information: Its not going to the red but it holds steady around 3/4 at 80mph and then will go back to normal running temperature
