lifter noise on start up
Can anyone give me a heads up I have an '05 Ram with a 4.7l and on first start up or once it's cooled down there is a top end noise sounds like a lifter loosing pressure or it's dis-charged. My question is should I change from regular 5w30 to full synthetic oil or that will still not correct the problem?
i have a '03 1500 with the 4.7L and i had the same problem...the next time you change the oil i it, put 5 quarts of 20w-50 in and a bottle of Lucas Oil Stabilizer...that should fix your problem...if it doesn't, take your valve covers off and makes sure all of your rocker arms are tightened down and not too loose...also make sure they aren't too tight...
If your engine makes noise when cold and goes away warmed up,then it's your exhaust bolts are loose or broken. Very common on 4.7 because lack of exhaust support mounting. The sound goes away because heat expansion seals the leak when hot. And for those people that have lifter noise all of the time,even after changing out the lifters and the cam followers; the problem has to do with a design flaw of the head oiling circuit. The oil pump has to provide oil pressure to the head to lubricate the cam bearings first then the lifter galleys next then out of that galley to squirt oil onto the cam lobe and the roller it rides on. Here lies the problem, the hole that is drilled in the head to exit the lifter galley is vastly too large and results in the loss of pressure at the lifter galley and a resulting lack of pressure at the cam bearings, especially the front cam bearing. The noise comes from the lifters loosing pressure,not because they are bad ,rather the pressure drop at the lifter galley. My fix was to to tap the 16 holes with a 10/32 tap and make lucite jets on the lathe and drill them to .094" to keep the pressure up in the lifter oil galley.
