my car just cranks and cranks and just wont start and after trying to get the car to turn over smoke began coming out from around steering column

My first guess would be that your fuel pump is shot and you over heated your starter motor. Spray some start fluid into your throttle body and crank it over. If it fires up, you'll know that the pump is gone.

im thinking its the fuel pump and as i was trying to start up the ignition wire got hot and started to melt
