my 96 f150 will start at sylenoid but not with ignition and key plus it is surging on power

had timeing set  and waterpump changed when we were through it would
not start from inside  but will start at sylenoid  and power surging found big
wire next to distributor that has recently been unbolted but i dont know
where it goes and wonder if this can be causeing problem cause he
removed waterpump timeingchain faceplate and reset timeing

Locate a wiring diagram to find out where the "big" wire by the distributor goes IF its original and not some add on, Have a voltage drop test done on the starer circuit it requires a multimeter this will locate the problem. scan the vehicle for codes too.

If it starts when u jump the solenoid then the distributor wire is not the original it was for something else maybe like a kill switch. U need to check wire going to starter solenoid, make sure a wire is connected to terminal labeled "S" at the solenoid that u bypassed to start it
