Not that I experienced the problem but I was present at a friends mechanic shop when he was scratching his head over the same thing. Ford truck towed in because it would not start. Could not find the reason. Finally went to dealership shop manual on the web. Told to check the radio. Radio not functioning, somehow connected to the electronics, replaced radio and it started right up. Not as old as your vehicle, but worth investigating.
