Don't know if it applies to the 2003, but I have a 2010 with a 4.6 engine. Started doing it when basically new. I overfilled the gas tank, which the owners manual says not to. Consider it full when the auto pump clicks off the first time. By overfilling I sent liguid gas into the evac pump on the top of the engine, ruining it. Replace and it was fine. Check out the web for more info.
