My '71 Sting Ray has the original, but not functioning, radio in it. Is there any way of repairing this problem?

Are you trying to keep the original radio in it for some reason? Repairing it to keep it original could be costly, but I can find a place that does it for you and specializes in Corvette radios. Otherwise, you are better off replacing the unit, you will get much better sound by doing so, I recommend www.crutchfield.com you can always keep the stock unit aside to keep with the vehicle for possible resale, this is a common practice.
