I have a 1979 Ford F150 Custom and none of the rear lights will come on or will the brake lights work. the front lights work just fine what would could be the cause of this? the previous owner said they just stopped working one day

the previous owner ran a wire to the back and hooked it to the battery so when ever i
want to drive it i have to plug it in and it turns on the tail light and side lights in the rear
but its only for the illusion of brake light they still do not flash when the brake pedal is
pressed.

Wiring schematics can be found for free at the public library. Restore the wiring to the way Ford had it. Replace damaged or inoperative parts. If the vehicle is set up to tow something it may have wiring that confuses the way it is currently rewired. Towing wiring is printed on the packages of towing connectors where they sell them new. Rear light sockets for the truck can be at fault and availability may have been why the previous person attempted to change it. Note, any wire you connect to the battery must have a fuse or circuit breaker as close to the battery connection as possible. An unprotected circuit can be disastrous. Problems with lightbulbs and the way they are installed or connect can lead to confusion. Switch concerns and flasher circuits can be affected by the bulbs acting right first as well.
