I believe the '79 fuel gauge is in the tank like C4s (my '91 for example) if so they are notorious for having the contacts go bad. I don't know for sure about the '79 but I don't think it 's that bad of a job to pull it and check/clean it. Also possible it's the gauge too but much more likely it's the sender in the tank.

1968 through 1982 Corvettes are notorious for poor gauge performance and the fuel gauge is second only to the clock for failing without warning. Your's is warning you, its either the gauge or the sending unit, there is nothing between the two but 16-gauge electrical wire and fiberglass.

hello again , getting ready to change my thermostat in my 1990 corvette c-4, stock L-98, due to overheating problems. someone told me, it would be ok to put in a cooler 160, rather than the 180, might come on quicker, in traffic, etc. is this a good idea? will it effect other things in the car? can anybody help with this? only had the car a week,and have a handful of issues already, this one, need to fix first..... love the car !! any vette people out there? I have a 1969 Chevy Corvette. I have rebuilt or replaced almost every thing. I have not replaced the original A/C compressor but converted it to the new Eco friendly freon. I had it tested three times, had the cooler boxes cleaned out, fan replaced, yet I have trouble getting the car cool. I live in So. Cal. where it is a necessity of life to have the A/C work as good as when new from the factory. I put in heat/sound shielding under the floor mats, and had all components check for proper functioning. I was thinking of going to a serpentine belt system that would get the newest A/C compressor with the system. Has anyone done this or have any suggestions? 9 Answers
