As long as you purchase a name brand (Havoline, Pennzoil, Quaker State, Castrol, etc), you should be okay. I stay away from Shell, Texaco and store brands. In 1984, Synthetic Oils were rare and expensive, so GM always specified conventional motor oil. If memory serves me, at that time, the recommended weight was 10w30.
