Question type: General

I own a 71 monte with original paint original engine and original tranny, never touched it sat in a garage for 17 years so there is almost no rust and the mand who owned put 325000 miles on. like i said never been rebuilt. it has a 350 4bbl and a factory tach which had to be special ordered without the ss package. it is a very nice car and i was just wondering how many were made to see how rare it was.

The production numbers for the 1971 Monte Carlos factory equipped with a V8 is 112,599. That was the 2nd highest produced model on the shared platform next to the 2-door Malibu coupe. The platform was shared between all variations of the Chevelle, El Camino, Malibu, Monte Carlo, Concours wagon, Greenbrier sedan, (Buick) Le Sabre, (Cadillac) Coupe Deville, (Pontiac) GTO, (Oldsmobile) Cutlass/4-4-2, and a few more. The 350 was standard equipment as well as the tach. The SS model of the Carlos was 454 only. So there's not much from the SS package that'd be on a standard car. If you check the number of bolts on the rear axle gear cover and find 12 bolts instead of 10 it may have some optioned parts. Looks like a decent car though. How much did you pay?

The Buick Le Sabre and the Cadillac DeVille were not based on the Chevelle, Monte Carlo platform. The Le Sabre and the DeVille used the same platform as the Chevy Caprice/Impala, Buick Electra/Centurion, Pontiac Bonneville/Catalina, and Olds Delta 88/98. The Monte Carlo shared the platform with the Chevelle, Oldsmobile Cutlass/442, Pontiac Lemans/Tempest/Gran Prix, Buick Regal,Century.

All the cars I've mentioned are built on different variations of the same platform, even though they don't classify as the same type of car. They share the same underpinnings including the frame, suspension, and front cross members. Even though they were placed in different wheel base length packages. Pick up a year one catalog and it'll tell you all you need to know.

Thought there are 10 bolts on the cover of a 10 bolt and 12 on a standard 12 bolt, this is not always the way it works. when they say "10 or 12 bolt" it means how many bolts hold the ring gear to the diff.

275

The number of bolts on the ring gear directly coincide with the number of bolts on the diff cover. The only exception is a 12-bolt under some buick, pontiac, and olds cars. If you look at the diff cover and its clearanced for the ring gear its a true 12-bolt. If the cover is like a smooth round dish its actually a 10 bolt differential. They physically have a 12 bolt axle housing, but if you remove the cover the ring gear only has 10 bolts.

12 bolt is a 12 bolt as a 10 is a 10 bolt, jst count em, i hav a 72 monte carlo with an SS package, factory tatch, 12 bolt rerend, 400 tranny, bucket seats, only thing im missing is the BB 454 but i do have a 350 4bbl carb. And im the 3rd owner and i found a option package upgrade in the trunk.

Monte Carlo far from rare, nice car though. they also came with a 402,which was a nice engine. I think it was the buick rear end with 12 bolts on the cover & 10 on the ring gear.

10 bolt 12 bolt has nothing to do with how the ring and pinion is bolted in.Look under any car or truck and count the number of bolts holding the cover on is what is meant when, someone ask. Is it a 10 bolt or 12 bolt. Also there were NO 72 Monte Carlo SS's were built, 1971 was the last year for the SS. Period In 1972 they were called a Custom and the only big block you could get was the 402 cu.in. Also ALL 1971 Monte Carlo's came with self leveling rear air shocks, the pump was under the hood on the drivers side. Now as far as production number for 1971, if only 123,000 were built why is the serial number on my SS 238168 which indicates they built over 238,000. I will have to call gm and ask them about this. All 1970 and 1971 and 1972 Monte's were built in Kansas City. I know this information becasuse I knew the plant manger there who was working the line when the walked out,"he told me," in July of 1971 not in the fall of 1970 that has been written. I have spent over 43 years working on GM cars and trucks. I do consider myself an expert on the subject.

That is false about all Montes being built in Kansas city. I have a 71 Monte with factory tach and a 402 and mine was built in canada

Remo Williams is COMPLETLY wrong. If you think Kansis is the only state that had a GM Plant in it you live under a rock and working on GM cars for 43 years is small minded. There are GM Plants in Canada, California, Baltimore, Leeds, and the list goes on.... They ALL built montes in those 3 years not just Kansis. U code Cars in 1972 were 402 cars and W code cars were 454 cars in 1972 so not just 402's. Everything is an option from GM, buckets and console and 12 bolt and console and tach and gauges are NOT SS packages they are just options you can order and there are SS cars that dont have Tach and gauges because they were not ordered with THE OPTION of gauges. Nothing to do with SS package. NOT all 71's came with Air Ride system, on SS cars did and NO ss cars came with the 402. Self proclaimed expert my a$$, open a book and read about 49 other states and Canada before answering on GM's behalf and self professed...

There were I believe 6 plants that built the Monte Carlo, Flint, Kansas, Canada. Van Nuys. and the plant in Baltimore, Md.and Lakewood Ga. . What I meant to say was all 1971 SS came with load leveling rear shocks. There was no 4 speed SS Montes in 70 or 71. Here's something you may not know, only 1915 71 SS Monte Carlos were sold in the US, 4 were converted to right-hand drive and shipped to Australia The SS 454 engine was actually raised to a nominal 365 gross hp (272 kW) despite the reduction in compression ratio. This increase in horsepower was a result of the 454 engine using the more aggressive camshaft from the 390 hp 454 used in the 1970 Chevrolet Corvette and full-sized sedans. So Darren i did error in some of my previous comments but I have restored 3 1971 Monte Carlos. And the one in the picture, was the last SS built for the Gen 1 Monte Carlos SS's the last 6 digits on it was 238168. The most sporty and powerful option was the Monte Carlo SS 454 package. Priced at $420, it included a standard Turbo-Jet 454 of 454 CID (7.4 L) with a four-barrel carburetor, rated at 360 hp (269 kW)[5] at 4800 rpm. It also included heavy-duty suspension, wider tires, "SS 454" badging, and an automatic load-leveling rear suspension. The Turbo Hydra-Matic three-speed automatic was the only transmission available for this package. The rear axle came standard with a 3.06 ratio but was available in 2.56 and 3.31, although it still cost $222 (£142) extra. Weighing only a bit more than a comparably equipped Chevelle SS 454, the Monte Carlo SS was quite a fast car, although it accounted for less than 3% of Monte Carlos sold in 1970.

355

There were 159,341 1970 Monte Carlos built falling short of the projected 185,000 cars because of a strike at the Michigan Plant.

355

Production numbers for 1971 were 128,600. A total of 12 1971 Monte Carlo's were shipped to Australia in 1971 and converted to RH drive, 4 of these were SS models from the 1,919 produced.

Wrong again Remo........ Total Production: for 1970 Sport Coupe 142,153 SS 454 Package 3,823 Total Monte Carlo Production 145,976 There was NO PROJECTED SALES Numbers as it was the first year for the Monte Carlo and plain and simple they on produced 145,976 period ! how can you project sales with no sales history ?

Also The Michigan Plant was Baltimore and it was NOT the only plant to strike. The strike reached Canada as well and only 147 SS cars were made during regular production there for the whole year due to the strike. Not all plants had a complete lock out as some plants had scabs that crossed the lines and still worked. The 142,153 monte's were produced between all the plants not just Michigan.

10

I might be wrong, but I was told that the production number on the car started at 100,000. That’s why the number is over 200,000.

10

Actually, Canadian production numbers start at 500001, U.S. production numbers start at 100001, however Arlington Texas production numbers start at 200001. ALL 1970 & 1971 SS’s were 454’s and ALL 1970 & 1971 454’s were SS’s

Well, I am by no means an expert, but I own a 1970 Monte Carlo (non-SS) with the factory 400 4-barrel (402cid), factory Muncie 4-speed, and factory 12 bolt 3.31 rear end. It has factory buckets and no console. I know it's all original bc I have the build-sheet for it, and had all the numbers checked & they match. BTW_ built in Van Nuys CA and sold to a Dr. in Kansas. No SS ever had a 4-speed, and very few Montes had 4-speeds & most were 350cid motors...

z28john, congratulations on having a 402/4 spd! Those are very rare and quite desirable. I had a '71 402/4spd 25 years ago, and I've had 6 first gen Montes, so far. I recently finished a body-off restoration of my '70 Monte SS454. I've been researching these cars for many years and I've never heard of a 4 spd car with buckets that didn't have the console. I know about some that had buckets and column shifted automatics, and some that had bench seat with 4 spd, though. I try to get copies of build sheets of the rare Montes, and have a fair collection that I study and use to try to combat the bad information that gets put out about our cars, like was done by several others here. Darren has corrected some of the mistakes in these replies. Would it be possible to get a photocopy of your build sheet? I'd love to have it, and I can send you a copy of mine. Dan.

Dan/everyone, I have a 70 Monte with 26K original miles. It’s Cortez silver/ turquoise interior. It’s a L-48 350/300 hp factory 4spd car and it’s a bench seat car with a 12bolt. I’ve beentold they only made 731 of these? How rare and valuable is she? Thanks Bob. W30442bob@aol.com

Hello Bob. You have a great car and very low miles. That's incredible! Chevrolet records show 839 were built in 1970 with a 4 speed and a small block engine. This number includes the 400s, as well as the 350s. They don't show any further break down. The big block 400 is not included in this number. The First Generation Monte Carlo Club website is a great place for you to learn more about these cars, and there are some very knowledgeable and helpful people there. https://www.firstgenmc.com/forums/
