I have a 1965 chevrolet impala that has a 283 size engine in it, but the the car says it is a super sport. I wonder, is this true?

Hello, Hmnmm..that's strange! The minimum engine for the 1965 Impala SS was a 327. I therefore do not think yours is a SuperSport, but it depends on where it says it is one. Perhaps the engine was swapped out, or more likely, another replacement part was added from a SuperSport trim. CarGrrl

Hi before you post a reply to a question please do the research. Remember the Super sport option is a trim package not an engine package in the early to mid 60's. Best to check ID tag to see if a real SS or copy. Richard

You could have a Super Sport with a 6 cylinder if you ordered it that way.
Ok, old post, but I'll still post an answer so people will know... First, a 283 was a V8, not a V6. Second, They did indeed make a 1965 Impala with a 283. However, almost all of them were convertibles and/or sedans. They made VERY few hardtop coupes with the 283. Almost all hardtop coupes were SS's. It sounds like what the OP has/had is a very rare 65, non-ss, hardtop coupe, which someone has put SS badges on to make it look like an SS. BTW, when I say rare, they only made about 400 of them. I only know this because I had one twenty years ago... Hell, could be the same one, lol. Although mine had not been rebadged....
I have a numbers matching 1965 impala Super sport with a 283. So a 283 can come on a supers port.
I also had a number matching 65 ss with a 283 a 327 was option
I have a original 1965 impala SS with 283 as well. These people are clueless. Mine is a hard top 2 door and I’m doubting that is rare.

Yes I had 65 SS with 283 and 4 speed with ball head shift with pull up reverse lock out red bucket seats and white color. Hard top you could get 283 327 or 409 all SS

In 1965 my dad took me to pick up his SS impala. It had a 283 with a 2 barrel carb and a single tail pipe. The inside it had bucket seats and a center console with a vacuum guage. Trust me a true SS.
My mom's first car, in 1971, was a 1965 Super Sport with a 283. It's the first car I drove when I got my permit a few years later. As I recall, it had a pushbutton automatic transmission.
