Total Seal piston rings

Asked by dickinbend Nov 12, 2010 at 10:46 PM about the 1987 Toyota MR2

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I recently used Total Seal piston rings on an '87 mr2 engine rebuild.  After 3k mi I still had excessive oil consumption and was getting serious carbon buildup.  I tried a couple things to aid seating the rings but eventually tore it down again.  The rings were shot.  I had used a 200 grit hone instead of the required 300grit. Problem corrected - 3k mi later I have the same symptoms.  Anyone have experience w/ TS rings on these engines before I tear it down again and go back to stock rings?

might not be the rings, valve guides could be worn letting oil through.
