i have seen a toyota corolla 1987 hatch for sale and was told they have east west engines. is this correct?

Yes, all this means is that they have a transverse-mounted engine, meaning that the front of the engine is on the passenger side, and the rear of the engine & transmission are on the driver's side. The '87 Corolla does have a transverse-mounted engine as do many FWD cars since the 1980s.

Aye, the GT-S switched over in 88. Too bad they didn't have a high comp in the 84-87. Although the year -may- vary depending on country. Pretty sure Toyota didn't start using plants in other countries until 95, but I could be wrong.
