Hi. I brought a 96 RAV4 I was told it was a 4x4. My new boyfriend says it isn't 4wd. Other than taking the car to the dealership/mechanic, how can know for sure?

If it is a 4x4 it will have a button or switch for the 4x4 mode.awd is full time the front and back tires always pull. 4x4 is when you can manually lock the front axle. just have your boy friend look under the car to see if there is a drive shaft going to the rear of the car.If you were told it is by the people you bought it from then it should be.

I believe the easiest way would be to look under the front of the car and if there are drive-shafts going from the front wheels to the motor/box, then it is an AWD. The 2WD version is rear driven anyway.
