My boss owns one of these which he drives roughly 50-60 miles one way to work, and he is hurting from the gas consumption here at 3.25 per gallon for regular unleaded as of last evening. They are great cars but with a roughly 20 gallon tank and the expected fuel economy of a sport-ute, they are not good highway cars for commuting.

Its true they get around 20 miles per gallon. I have had 1994 to 1999 models. I think they are a great commuter, you can see over car in front of you so you dont have to slam the breaks as much in heavy traffic. They are very comfortable. Mine held 16 gallons. They last forever. http://www.used-4runner.com Mike

I think the best mpg I got w/ my 2002 SR5 2wd was 22mpg on the highway............then I decided to take a 1mpg loss and supercharge my 3.4L. Like the factory version is Dr. Jeckell and Supercharged version is Mr. Hyde!

Oh yeah, I was commuting 140 mi each way with my 2005 Sport Edition. Best mpg was at 85mph and always over 23mpg

I have a 2000 4 Runner I get about 17 miles to a gallon on it I've had it since it was new all maintenance done at dealer runs great It's a Wonderful truck they only have a 15 gallon gas tank so it feels like you fill it up frequently

2003 4runner V-8 4.7 L engine Sport highway mileage @70mph is19mpg City 16mpg! 23 gallon tank -- 2013 4runner V-6 4.0L engine SR5 highway @70 mph is 20mpg ; City 17 mpg ! 19 gallon tank I would recommend something else for commuting, if you prefer Toyotas and need 4 wheel traction and can afford to reduce capacity I would go with a RAV4 otherwise a Corolla, Camry, or Prius for the best economy bar living in a heavy snow area then no prius!
