Why does tune up job need a head gasket?

Asked by fblair301 Oct 27, 2010 at 05:27 PM about the 2006 Toyota Camry Solara

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a Solara with 122,000 miles on it and I have it in for some new belts and it also needs a tune up.  The shop said that in doing the tune up, the head gasket might tear and so they need one on hand in case; the gasket is $100.00.  Why would replacing 6 plugs involve the head gasket??

Thanks, Fred

You dont. First off 100 dolars for a head gasket is a rip off(There around 30 dollars).second a head gasket is not a part of a tune up. They have to dissasemble a good part of the engine to replace it. Your getting ripped off stay away from that dealership/shop and id report them. There is no need for you to replace the gasket at this time. There just trying to steal money from you. Thanks Robert G

You have 122000 miles on a 5 year old car. That is some hard driving. New belts is a very vague description , but needing them indicates that might be your first tuneup or when was your last tuneup? If you have a 6 cylinder the back 3 plugs are almost impossible to get to without doing something with the engine. If you are putting 60K a year on your car that is 20 oil changes (once every 15-20 days) and you should have had your service light come on at 75,000 and almost again.

Dude... A head gasket replacement for 100 bux would be a killer deal. But this guy said intake gasket not head gasket. Because you have to remove the intake to get to the rear plugs and some times they rip And its alot of added labor. So yeah he was telling you right but im sure you got a tune up by now and know this other idiot who says STAY away dont know jack about mechanic work
