Can a 97 engine be put in a 98 Silverado without changing the wiring? I was told the 98 has a Delphi harness and it's not comparable.

You always need a compatible computer when swapping modern engines. It sounds like you answered your own question.

Yes you can, if any component is different then switch it out with what the old one has, but the bulk of it is compatable
