Steering Column

Asked by Sarah Feb 17, 2019 at 08:29 PM about the 2002 Chevrolet S-10

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

There seem to be a lot of people in here that are
huge helpers when it comes to car questions. I
was hoping you would be able to answer mine...
please and thank you? I have a 2002 Chevy S10.
I've been having many issues out of it so I'm trying
to change out the entire steering column with a
GMC one. Can that be done?

I would stay as close to stock as you can, year/make/model, to avoid any problems with even minor variations in wire harnesses. That said, there are a lot of GM parts that work across multiple models so such a swap would likely work. You will also need to reprogram the anti theft system to work with new keys. Do you mind if I ask what sort of problems you are having with the old column that warrants replacing? You might find it easier to repair that go through the hassle of replacing an entire column.

I need to change the ignition switch and realized that the multifunction was melted and it was cheaper to buy the entire steering column then the multifunction. It's $200 even with my discount

Try to find a multifunction switch in a salvage yard, you can also swap just the ignition switch without affecting the anti theft, unlike the lock cylinder which would require reprogramming for keys. Replacing the entire column tends to open a can of worms, and the steering coupling is a major PITA to get to.

Ok I'll try that. I appreciate so much. This truck has to at least last until I get my tax check. It's been awesome little truck. Of course she wants to get sick on me right before I can get something better for my everyday. I still want to keep her for hauling tho.
