Get the codes read at the parts store. The code will tell you what needs to be fixed.

You can reset it by disconnect the positive cable of your battery than attch it back that will reset it but the best thing to do is to get the engine read to get a code you can do this for free at autozone auto parts and they will give you a paper with the possible problem.

If your light is coming on and going of by its self. This means the OBD system is detecting a problem TWICE under the same engine conditions. That's what turns on the light. When it doesn't stay on that means the condition is not constant. So when the problem is no longer present the light goes off. EXp Gas cap seal leak may come and go with air temp.

the emissions test tech gave me the codes for why the "Check Engine " light was on. in my 1999 S-10. He said thatr the code was bank 1 and bank 2 indicated running "lean" is there a simple fix

Google the trouble code. This will give you a list of things that would store the code in the O B D system and turn on the light. An engine running lean indicates that the Computer can't adjusted the time the injector stays open to maintain the proper fuel mixture. This could be caused by dirty fuel filter or a vacuum leak (letting in additional air) or a week fuel pump. (vacuum leak can also be on intake manifold)

Google code .Transmissions are also controlled by electric shift solenoids. If one of them fails it could store a code. If it's an automatic.

I wish disconnecting the battery, waiting 15 minutes then re-connecting was the answer. Yes, it will turn off the "Service Engine Soon" light, TEMPORARILY, AND it will also erase Everything in your car's computer. So if you go for inspection, you'll get a Computer Not Ready result and you'll fail inspection. They'll tell you to drive the car around for a while for some data. However after some driving, your Service Engine Soon light will reappear along with that Data. SO; You will need to Check ALL your fluids and everything you can think of. Then have someone at AutoZone, or wherever, put the Reader on it. Not only to possibly get a Code that describes the issue, but also to clear it. The Service Engine Soon light is NOT the Check Engine light. Check Engine means something is wrong and you need to fix it. But, the Service Engine Soon Light WILL keep you from Passing an Inspection.
