Hi derfcorp, My research has found that the 1966 Ford Mustang came stock with a 3-speed manual transmission from the factory. Hope this helps!

A five speed manual transmission gearbox was never a factory option in the 1966 Mustang. Four speed manual was the norm for a high-performance transmission in the 1960s. Five speeds didn't appear in US models until the late 1970s to the 1980s. I sounds like you have a '66 fitted with a 5.0 from one of the later model Mustangs.
