I have a 1971 camaro that I think is a SS but the trim tag does not have Z 27 what does this meen is it a SS?

Here's a whole page dedicated to the '71 Camaro: http://www.camarosource.ca/php/camaro_info_db/index.php?year=1971. According to that page, the SS option package could not be combined with a Z28. The VIN decoder on that page should help you learn more about your particular car. Hope that helps!

then it's not an SS. @WD-it's not a Z-28 , Z27 is the body code for an SS.
