I've had a 1978 and 1982 Camaro and they were constantly breaking down. I had to replace the block twice in my '82 - once by throwing a rod and once for bearing failure and seizure. Maybe since '82 they became more reliable... Over the years I've asked the tow truck operators about the vehicles that they would have to rescue. They overwhelmingly would respond with Camaro being the number one vehicle year after year. Of course, this is only my experiences with 2 different model years (Chevrolet Camaro).

I wouldn't worry about the ticket temptation- you can get one in just about anything, and a suburban is faster than that thing was new, let alone 20 years later. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/FAQ/1431

I am a teenager and I have an 89 Camaro. I am currently working on it because it doesn't run. the spark on the spark plug doesn't work right. the spark isn't fast and I think it is the spark coil. although it doesn't run I love it. it is white and has T-tops its really cool.
